Obituary

Joan Catherine Jones, age 90, of Crocker, was born August 23, 1933, in Hancock, a daughter of Grover Cleveland and Sylvia Kay (Kehr) Mitchell, and passed from this life on August 20, 2024, in the Lake Regional Hospital, just two days short of turning 91.

Mrs. Jones was united in marriage on January 3, 1953, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, to the love of her life Billy Gene Jones, and to this union two children were born.

She was baptized early in life and was a faithful member of the Dixon Church of Christ for many years. Mrs. Jones attended Hancock Elementary School through the 8th grade, then attended Dixon High School and graduated with the class of 1950. Joan was raised in Hancock, Missouri, and loved to talk about growing up there. She would talk about her and her sister Betty Lou running off to the Train Depot, where their dad worked, to see what he was doing and to play. She loved when everyone would come to their house to play ball or croquet in the front yard. Joan always said Hancock was the place to be!

After high school, Joan went to work at Fort Leonard Wood. Then later followed her husband while he was in college and joined the Air Force until his honorable discharge. Joan and Bill made their home in Crocker where he started his career with the Crocker School District. She always enjoyed going with him on band and senior trips and could tell some wild stories about the students and bus drivers.

In 1967, Joan went to work for the Bank of Crocker. She enjoyed every minute of working, retiring in 2013 after her husband, Bill, passed, but would still be working there if she was able. Joan enjoyed working in her yard, which she took great pride in, and she was honored to be awarded yard of the month. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandma (Meme) to her grandchildren.

Those left to mourn the passing of Mrs. Jones include: her son, Steve Jones, Dixon; her daughter, Pamela Sherrell, Crocker; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren her pride and joys, Matt Jones (Josie), Amy Franklin (Larry), Isaac Sherrell (Megan); her great-grandchildren, Jozilyn, Wyatt, Parker, Bentley, Kade and Kinsley; several nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband of 60 years, Bill, she was also proceeded in death by her parents, Grover and Sylvia Mitchell; brothers, Ralph Womack, Donald Mitchell, and Ronald Mitchell; and sisters, Ruth George, and Betty Crews.
