Odessa M. Maassen, of O'Fallon, formerly of Dixon, was born on May 28, 1921, in Maries County, a daughter of Stephen and Mary Arminta (Minzes) Martin, and departed this life at 10:25 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017, in the Garden View Care Center, O'Fallon. Mrs. Maassen had been in failing health for some time and had attained the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 20 days.
Mrs. Maassen was united in marriage on April 20, 1940, at Our Lady of Help Catholic Church in Frankenstein, to Clement John Maassen and to this union two sons were born. She was preceded in death by her husband on August 15, 1979; her father on June 25, 1922; her mother on April 1, 1987; and five brothers, infant Clarence Martin on May 11, 1918, Leonard Martin on May 26, 1931, Herbert Martin on February 5, 1992, Roy Shelden on December 13, 1981 and Reuben C. Shelden on November 17, 1999.
Mrs. Maassen was a member of the St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dixon. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, was an expert seamstress and enjoyed making her family's clothing, as well as sewing for others for many years. She was a loving and devoted homemaker, always diligent in providing for the needs of her family.
Those left to mourn the passing of Mrs. Maassen include: two sons and one daughter-in-law, Stephen Maassen, St. Peters and Lowell Wayne and Cherie Maassen, O'Fallon; five grandchildren, Carrie (Maassen) McArdle, Jeffrey Maassen, Diane Maassen, Victoria (Maassen) Cochran and Esther Maassen; two great-grandchildren, Trenton Maassen and Dylan Maltz; two grand-sons-in-law, Richard McArdle and Nathan Cochran; and many other relatives and friends.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mrs. Maassen at 12:00 noon, Thursday, February 23, 2017, in the St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dixon with the Rev. Joseph Hoi celebrating.
Interment was in the Kenner Cemetery near Dixon under the direction of the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Dixon. Pallbearers for Mrs. Maassen were Jeffrey Maassen, Trenton Maassen, Dylan Maltz, Richard McArdle, Richard Obermeier and Bennie Waldron.
Memorial contributions are suggested by the family to the Alzheimer's Association with envelopes available at the St. Theresa Catholic Church or the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Dixon.
