Sue Ellen Alexander, formerly of Dixon, was born on July 3, 1923, at Dixon, a daughter of Wade M. and Lulu E. (Anderson) Hancock, and departed this life at 2:15 p.m., Friday, November 6, 2020 in the St. Andrews at New Florence. Mrs. Alexander had been in failing health for some time and had attained the age of 97 years, 4 months and 3 days.
Mrs. Alexander was united in marriage on January 30, 1948, at St. Louis, to her school mate, Mr. Charles Berton Alexander. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 5, 1986; her father, Wade in 1935; her mother, Lulu in 1967; her brother, Rhea Hancock on December 19, 1988 and her sister, Ruth Johnson on February 21, 2019.
Mrs. Alexander was raised on a farm near Dixon, attended a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Dixon High School in 1941. Following graduation, while her brother was away at war, Sue was in charge of caring for the horses. She later moved to St. Louis and worked for a small arms amnion plant and later for General Cables. Mrs. Alexander later worked for the Orchid Paper Company as well as being a homemaker. She and Berton enjoyed traveling until his death in 1986. Mrs. Alexander was a member of the VFW Post 4238 Ladies Auxiliary in Dixon and the Dixon Senior Center where she was a board member for over 15 years. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan and enjoyed reading, word search games, crocheting, baking pies and being with her family and friends.
Those left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Sue Ellen Alexander include: many nephews; nieces; great; great-great and great-great-great nephews and nieces; cousins and many friends that she had made throughout her lifetime.
Visitation from 11:00 a.m. with her funeral service held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 in the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Chapel, Dixon with Bro. Danny Graves officiating.
Interment will be in the Dixon Cemetery under the direction of the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Dixon. Pallbearers for Mrs. Alexander are Michael D. Houston, Kenneth W. Becker, Johnathan L. Nelson and Shawn W. Becker.
Memorial contributions are suggested by the family to the Dixon Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund with envelopes available at the funeral home.
